German cuisine relies heavily on well-made sauces, and the brands in our shop have been perfecting them for generations.

Knorr was founded in 1838 by Carl Heinrich Theodor Knorr in Heilbronn, Baden-Württemberg. Originally a chicory supplier to the coffee industry, Knorr pioneered food preservation through drying and by the late 19th century had become synonymous with dried soups across continental Europe. Today, Knorr is owned by Unilever and operates globally, but its core products — bouillon cubes, Fix sauce mixes, and gourmet sauces — remain deeply rooted in German cooking traditions. The Knorr Fix range provides ready-portioned seasoning mixes for specific dishes (Jägerschnitzel, Gulasch, Geschnetzeltes), making authentic German cooking accessible even for beginners.

Maggi was founded in 1884 by Julius Maggi in Switzerland. His vision was to create nutritious, affordable meals for working families who lacked time to cook from scratch. He developed powdered pea and bean soups in 1886, followed immediately by the now-iconic Maggi liquid seasoning. The brand was acquired by Nestlé in 1947. In Germany, Maggi is a household name — its bouillon cubes, Fix products and Würze (liquid seasoning) are pantry staples found in virtually every German kitchen.

Mondamin has been a trusted name in German kitchens since 1896. Originally developed as a cornstarch-based thickening agent for sauces, soups and desserts, the brand is now part of Unilever. Mondamin's Saucenbinder (sauce binder) is one of its most recognizable products — available in light, dark and vegetable variants. It gives sauces a smooth, lump-free consistency in seconds, without altering the flavour. For German home cooks, reaching for the Mondamin box when finishing a sauce is second nature.

Thomy has its origins in Swiss mustard production. The Helvetia company began industrial-scale mustard production in 1907 in Langenthal, Switzerland. Hans Thomi was the first to sell mustard in a tube — an innovation that distinguished the brand from all competitors. The name was registered as "Thomy" in 1930, replacing the 'i' with 'y' for international appeal. Thomy added mayonnaise in 1951 and salad dressings in 1976. Acquired by Nestlé in 1971, Thomy today operates production plants in Karlsruhe and Neuss (Germany) and Basel (Switzerland). Its asparagus sauce (Spargelsoße) is one of our most popular seasonal items.

FAQ

What is Saucenbinder and how do I use it?

Saucenbinder is Mondamin's starch-based sauce thickener. You stir it directly into a simmering sauce — no pre-mixing needed — and within seconds the sauce reaches a smooth, even consistency. It comes in light (for cream and white sauces), dark (for gravies and brown sauces) and vegetable variants.

What is the difference between Knorr Fix and Maggi Fix?

Both are portioned seasoning mixes for specific German dishes. Knorr Fix and Maggi Fix cover similar dishes — Gulasch, Jägerschnitzel, Geschnetzeltes — but have distinct flavour profiles. Most German families have a preference for one brand, and the taste difference is noticeable. We stock both so you can choose your favourite.

Why is Thomy's asparagus sauce so popular?

Germany has a deep cultural connection to white asparagus (Spargel), with a dedicated season each spring (April through June). Thomy's Spargelsoße is a ready-made Hollandaise-style sauce specifically formulated for asparagus. It captures the traditional German accompaniment without the effort of making Hollandaise from scratch.

Can I make authentic German gravy with these products?

Absolutely. A classic Bratensoße (roast gravy) can be made using Knorr or Maggi bouillon cubes as a base, with Mondamin Saucenbinder for thickening. For a quick weeknight version, Knorr's gravy mix packets produce an authentic result in minutes.
