If you take it very seriously (which we usually like to do in Germany), rhubarb is actually a vegetable. However, because of its cheerful, fresh nature and its unique flavor, it passes for a fruit, especially in jams and compotes. The Americans recognized this in 1947 and quickly declared the vegetable a fruit by law. Thanks USA.
