Thus, the Latin American beekeepers receive fixed minimum prices for the honey, which cover all costs and secure the livelihood of the families. Furthermore, healthy and socially acceptable working conditions are ensured. Additional investments in schools, hospitals or infrastructure also help to improve the beekeepers' standard of living. In order to also be allowed to bear the organic seal, Fairtrade organic honey also fulfills additional criteria: The hives may only be placed in largely natural locations. In addition, within a radius of three kilometers, only wild or organically cultivated plants may be available to the bees for nectar collection.
